Reflexology

What is Reflexology?

"Reflexology is a natural therapy using tactile stimulation, applied with varying degrees of pressure to the feet and hands, which reflect the organs of the body."  - Lillian Tibshraeny-Morten

How does Reflexology work?

Applying pressure to these reflex areas stimulates the nervous and circulatory systems.  Reflexology stimulates the nervous system by energizing nerve fibers that transmit impulses to the brain through the central nervous system.  The brain processes these impulses and sends a response back to the corresponding body part.  Reflexology works through the circulatory system by aiding in the release of hormones and endorphins which are carried forward through blood to all parts of the body.

Reflexology works through energy (chi) flow along meridians -- energetic pathways running through the entire body.  Chi is defined as the electric energy associated with living organisms.

Reflexology works on the concept that tenderness in reflex points denote congestion in the corresponding body part.  Deep pressure on specific points can crush crystal-like deposits that form in the nerve endings of the feet, which releases any blockages.  The result of stimulating these nerve endings is the release of endorphins -- the body’s natural pain relievers -- resulting in a sense of calmness and relaxation.

Overall Goal of Reflexology -- Homeostasis

Homeostasis is the body's state of equilibrium.  Reflexology works to help the body achieve homeostasis by aiding in the delivery of nutrients and oxygen to cells allowing organs and muscles their return to a normal state of function.
